The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of DJ Unk, the Atlanta-based rapper and producer best known for his early 2000s hits "Walk It Out" and "2 Step." Reports confirm that the artist, born Anthony Leonard Platt, passed away at the age of 42.

A Legacy in Hip-Hop

DJ Unk emerged as a significant figure in the Atlanta rap scene in the mid-2000s. Signed to Big Oomp Records, he gained national recognition with the release of Beat'n Down Yo Block! in 2006. The album featured "Walk It Out," a song that quickly became a club and radio sensation, influencing the dance culture of the time. The track’s success led to a remix featuring hip-hop heavyweights André 3000, Jim Jones, and Big Boi.

Following the success of his debut, Unk continued his momentum with 2econd Season in 2008, which featured the hit single "2 Step." His music was celebrated for its infectious beats, party anthems, and impact on the Atlanta hip-hop movement.

Health Struggles and Career

In 2009, DJ Unk suffered a mild heart attack, prompting him to make lifestyle changes, including giving up alcohol and marijuana. Despite health struggles, he remained active in the music industry, releasing new music independently and continuing to influence young artists.

Though he may not have maintained the same level of mainstream success in later years, DJ Unk remained a respected figure in hip-hop. His contributions to the genre and his influence on the Southern rap scene remain undeniable.

Remembering DJ Unk

Korey "Big Oomp" Robinson, the founder of Big Oomp Records, paid tribute to Unk, calling him a "legendary DJ, rapper, and producer" whose music will continue to inspire future generations.

His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing deep sorrow over his passing and asking for privacy during this difficult time.

As tributes pour in from fans and fellow artists, DJ Unk’s music and legacy will live on. His contributions to hip-hop culture, particularly in Atlanta, remain a testament to his talent and influence.

Rest in peace, DJ Unk. Your music will forever be a part of hip-hop history
