The Detroit Lions are playing a historic 2024 season, and on Monday night they made history in another category. The Lions finished their fifth game of the year with 40 or more points and no turnovers in a 40-34 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Detroit also lost a 52-6 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 11, a 52-14 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 8, a 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6, and a 42-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4.
Only two teams in NFL history have recorded 40 or more points and no turnovers in four games: the Baltimore Ravens in 2019 and the Buffalo Bills in 2024. The Lions' historic night didn't end with them scoring over 40 points and committing no turnovers. Their offense became the first in NFL history to have two receivers and two running backs combine for 1,000 scrimmage yards: wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, and running backs David Montgomery and Jahmil Gibbs all achieved the feat.
The Lions face off against division rivals the Minnesota Vikings in the most important game of the season. At stake is the NFC North crown and first place in the NFC. The loser of this showdown to close the regular season will finish in fifth place. Detroit didn't need to beat the 49ers to stay in first place, but coach Dan Campbell approached Monday Night Football the same way he always has. He said that continuing to run hard was "the right thing to do" and that he "owed it to my team."
So far this season, quarterback Jared Goff has thrown 36 touchdowns (second in the league) and 10 interceptions. The Lions defense is dealing with a number of significant injuries, so the continued excellence of their offense will be crucial to a Super Bowl appearance. Detroit has 21 players on injured reserve, the most in the NFL.
